Is this an Equal Opportunity Recession?  Is your Financial Wardrobe in order?

We all know its official…we are in the middle of an economic downturn…or, as it is more commonly known, a recession.  And now the chatter from the “talking heads” in Washington is that the current recession will be over by the end of the year and by 2010, we should be in recovery.  That’s all well and good, I guess, if it actually materializes…but in the meantime, we all need to find a way to maintain, and even grow, in this environment regardless of the light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel predictions.  But are men and women being affected the same by our country’s economic challenges?  Is this, in fact, an equal opportunity recession?

Interestingly, the answer on many levels is “no”.  For example, did you know that as a result of this recession, women could represent the majority of American workers for the first time in our history?  That’s right!  Coming into the recession, women made up approximately 49% of working Americans and a majority of the pink slips that have been issued throughout the recession have been in male-dominated fields, such as manufacturing and construction.  That means as we come out of this current economic state, with more men losing their jobs during the recession, women could represent more than 50% of the American workforce…for the first time…ever!

There are many other differences in the way the sexes attack these economic challenging times, too…from their approach to building and growing (yes…growing!) business during this recession, to expectations for investments, to developing opportunities from job loss (think making lemonade from lemons!).  The business development skills we have taught, encouraged and honed at SKIRTworking are perfect to GROW business in this environment.  By employing these strategies into your business, women (and men) can be thriving right now by both increasing gross income and decreasing net expenses!  Not coincidentally, many members of our SKIRT group are having their most successful year to date…even as many others are dying on the vine.

Michelle, Michelle and I will be on VoiceAmerica Talk Radio Network with Dr. Marlene Siersema on Wednesday, May 6th from 2:00-3:00pm Pacific time discussing these very topics.  We will be talking about how women can achieve financial stability and success during this economic downturn.  This is great information for anyone that is looking to start, grow and improve their business…and, really, who isn’t in that category?  Log on and listen at www.awbbsshow.com!
